American 1930s.

Let's see if you can make the connection!  Think about some of  the naturalistic elements we identified in class (Chapter 1).  What aspects or characteristics of the 1930are being demonstrated to us at those moments in the text?  What do you believe John Steinbeck was trying to show us or expose about the way people, life, or society was during this time in American history

The text shows us how people really lived in the 1930's. Before I thought that mostly everyone lived in glamour with their fancy old cars and their feather barrettes. Education was a luxury for people and the main characters George and Lennie didn't have it. In chapter 1 they aren't shown very civilised because of the way they speak and their grammer.

John Steinbeck was trying to show us that society was more judging but it didn't have very high standards. If People knew that Lennie wasn't right in the head, people would give him dirty looks or treat him like he's worthless. If you had an education people would treat you respectfully and you'd have a high place in society. And not many people got an education and became more than a farm worker or factory worker.
