 Naturalism

Let's see if you can make the connection!  Think about some of  the naturalistic elements we identified in class (Chapter 1).  What aspects or characteristics of the 1930s are being demonstrated to us at those moments in the text?  What do you believe John Steinbeck was trying to show us or expose about the way people, life, or society was during this time in American history?

Today there are no ranches that hire you and let you live on them, providing you with basic necessities as long as yo work there like the place that Lennie and George are in. When they were all talking in the book it sounded like slang and the book would spell everything out the way it sounds. They also needed a lot of people to do the ranch work but today we have easy o operate machines to do all of the hard work.

People had a very hard life back then and society was cruel and judgemental. Because of the Great depression the unemployment rates were high and it was hard to find a job nonetheless a good one. In the book it said that people who worked on ranches were usually alone and they had nothing to live for except their survival.
